What is Art?

Art can mean so many things to as many different people. It can be in the eye of the beholder or defined by its maker. It can touch someone’s soul or trigger a memory in such a variety of ways.

whatisartThe Ancient Greek thoughts on the subject: For Plato visual art was an imitation skill and beauty was the ideal expressed in the truth of things. Art was to hold an essential ideal of that imitation. For Aristotle’s view was that you had to knows its matter, its maker, its form and its purpose to understand it. Plato thought that art was dangerous in that it was too far from the ideal. Aristotle thought it could be a route to knowledge.

Today our outlook of the artist is largely planted in the perception of what that piece of “art” represented to a society at that time period.

Throughout art history look at all the different types of expressions. When impressionism came out the establishment launched out hate campaigns. Cubism, minimalism, expressionism, orientalism, Pre-Raphaelites, Renaissance and so many more movements all had their rough starts. Society is more lenient today because we have been through all these different ways to “Art”.

One thing that is for sure, is that all of this “art” derives from an inborn human instinct to create. Many artists talk about their drive to draw, paint, sculpt, etc. came in early childhood. It is thought that this drive to create comes from how their childhood experiences reflect upon their developing mind. Their society, family and culture are said to affect how that child creates.

To be sure the artist’s ability to observe then turn it into art requires quite the imagination in how they want to describe it to the world.

It doesn’t matter what type of art you classify as “art” as long as you keep creating. There are so many expressions that affect emotions, memories, hate or misunderstanding. If someone expresses that they don’t like your work it doesn’t mean that it is bad, it means it wasn’t meant for them. Find the client that will enjoy it. What is one man’s trash is another one’s treasure. Be confident and quit comparing yourself to other artists. They are not you with your experiences to reflect what you like.
